A 1910-S Wheat penny in Mint State (MS-63) Red-Brown has no wear at all, because it never circulated. What separates it from the mint state grades above is contact marks rather than wear: the open fields before and behind Lincoln’s portrait carry scattered nicks picked up in the mint bag, and the lustre is unbroken but not exceptional. Red-brown is the middle designation: somewhere between five and ninety-five per cent of the original mint red survives on a 1910-S Wheat penny graded this way and the rest has gone. It is much the widest of the three bands, and the one where two graders most easily disagree.
