What every coin page gives you

The answer in the first sentence

What the coin is made of and what that is worth, before anything else on the page.

Melt value, with the working shown

Troy ounces times the metal price, printed as the multiplication rather than as a result — with the price it used and the day that price was set. Coins with no silver or gold say so.

The specification in rows

Composition, weight, diameter, precious-metal content in troy ounces, face value, both faces, and the mints that struck that year.

Whether it beats melt

How common the issue is, its mintage, and what would have to be true of your coin for it to be worth more than its metal.

Prices by grade, or nothing

A value range against a named grade where there is a source we will stand behind, and a plain line saying there is none where there is not.

The series around it

The years, the designer, where the mint mark sits, and the dates the metal changed — plus the other years we hold and a link to all of them.

Common Coin Questions

How much is my coin worth?
A coin is worth whichever is higher: the metal in it, or what a collector will pay for that date, mint mark and condition. Read the full answer.
Does condition affect a coin’s value?
Condition is the largest single factor in what a coin is worth, and on a common date it is the only one: the same coin worn smooth and the same coin as it left the press can differ in price by fifty times or more. Read the full answer.
What is coin grading?
Coin grading is the assessment of how much wear and how many marks a coin carries, expressed as a number from 1 to 70 on a scale the whole trade prices against. Read the full answer.
What is spot price?
Spot price is what one troy ounce of a metal is trading for on the international market right now. It is the number a coin’s melt value is calculated from, and it is not the price a dealer will pay you for a coin. Read the full answer.
Does cleaning a coin reduce its value?
Yes, and on a collectable coin the loss is severe: cleaning strips the original surface, the trade recognises it instantly, and a cleaned coin sells for a fraction of what the same coin would have brought untouched. Read the full answer.
