What MS65RB means
A 1916-D Wheat penny in Mint State (MS-65) Red-Brown is a gem: no wear, full unbroken lustre, and marks so few and so small that the open fields before and behind Lincoln’s portrait survive inspection under magnification. On a scarce date this is usually where the certified population collapses and the price stops following the grade in a straight line. Red-brown is the middle designation: somewhere between five and ninety-five per cent of the original mint red survives on a 1916-D Wheat penny graded this way and the rest has gone. It is much the widest of the three bands, and the one where two graders most easily disagree.
