A 1935-D Wheat penny in Mint State (MS-60) Red-Brown has no wear at all and is graded at the bottom of mint state for everything else: the open fields before and behind Lincoln’s portrait carry heavy contact marks from the mint bag, the lustre is dull or broken, and the coin has little eye appeal. Nothing about it circulated; everything about it was handled. Red-brown is the middle designation: somewhere between five and ninety-five per cent of the original mint red survives on a 1935-D Wheat penny graded this way and the rest has gone. It is much the widest of the three bands, and the one where two graders most easily disagree.
