A 1956-D Wheat penny in Mint State (MS-65) Brown is a gem: no wear, full unbroken lustre, and marks so few and so small that the open fields before and behind Lincoln’s portrait survive inspection under magnification. On a scarce date this is usually where the certified population collapses and the price stops following the grade in a straight line. Brown is what copper becomes: the mint red has oxidised away across all but a few per cent of both faces.
