Melt value is what the gold is worth, not necessarily what you can sell it for. But it's a good baseline. Worked at full mint weight, so a worn coin comes to slightly less. United States gold struck before 1834 is not in the table: it is a lighter standard, and every one of those coins is worth a multiple of its metal. Neither are the commemorative and First Spouse issues, nor any foreign gold — a Sovereign, a Napoleon and a Krugerrand are all standards of their own. A bar or a round is worth what its maker stamped on it, which is a weaker fact than a mint specification: gold is the metal fakes are made of, so weigh and measure anything that did not come from a dealer you trust.
What a gold coin is worth beyond its metal
The date, the mint and the condition decide the rest, and none of them is on this page. Gold is also the metal counterfeiters bother with, so a coin that has not been weighed and measured is a coin whose melt value is hypothetical. The catalogue has no gold coins in it yet; until it does, the melt section carries the same arithmetic for the metals that are in it.
