A 1940-D Wheat penny in Mint State (MS-64) Brown has no wear, full lustre and only minor marks, none of them where the eye lands first. This is the grade at which a coin stops being judged by its faults and starts being judged by how it looks. Brown is what copper becomes: the mint red has oxidised away across all but a few per cent of both faces. Nearly every 1940-D Wheat penny that has spent decades outside an airtight holder is brown, and brown is much the cheapest of the three colours.
