A 1940-D Wheat penny in Very Good (VG-10) is a Very Good coin at the better end of the grade: the cheekbone and the jaw of Lincoln’s portrait and the hair above his ear are smooth as they are at eight, but a little of the individual grains on the wheat ears and the strands of hair above Lincoln’s ear survives where the design was struck deepest, and LIBERTY behind the shoulder, IN GOD WE TRUST above the head and the date and the rim are bold. Both Very Good rungs describe a heavily worn coin that is nonetheless complete and easy to read.
