An 1879-S Morgan dollar in Very Fine (VF-35) is Very Fine at its top edge and is routinely mistaken for the grade above: the eagle’s individual wing and breast feathers and the leaves of the wreath are nearly all present, the wear is confined to the hair above Liberty’s ear and the cotton bolls in her cap where they stand highest, and traces of lustre sometimes survive beside the devices. What separates it from Extremely Fine is how far the flattening has spread rather than any feature a reader can point at.
